Re: The reputation of Thomas Armstrong Jones

Hello Alan, I'm so glad you posted a reply and I kept my emails. I would have hoped that researchers such as yourself would double check what I stated. If I were in your shoes I would have posted exactly the same thing "Can you explain" because I could not find where the ADAH stated that information. Let me try and explain what I believe happened. First the ADAH information about Thomas Armstrong Jones on April 1, 2014

Alan, I then wrote an email to the ADAH over my concerns with what they had posted. The following is the email:

Thx for getting back to me, This is in regards to Thomas A. Jones of Company D 16th Regiment, Alabama Infantry.

As we know the dead cannot speak for themselves and the ADAH may have made an understandable error concerning Thomas Armstrong Jones.

The ADAH have him as a soldier with the 3rd Maryland Cavalry (Union).

I've been compiling information on the galvanized Yankees in the 3rd Maryland Cavalry for over a year now with several trips to the NARA, in DC. Believe me when I say the former Confederates in the 3rd Maryland Cavalry came from 3 areas. The vast majority from the Gettysburg Campaign and some from the Tullahoma Campaign and some from the Vicksburg Campaign.

There never has been an issue about his Confederate unit he was with Company D 16th Regiment, Alabama Infantry. (Unless we want to split hairs and claim him with the 1st Alabama Infantry because of the merger on April 8, 1865) The 16th Alabama was not at the Gettysburg Campaign. However, the 16th Alabama was near or at the Tullahoma Campaign. However he has NO transfer records as we should expect him to have. If he were a prisoner at the Tullahoma Campaign then he would have been taken to Nashville, TN and then to Louisville, KY and then to Camp Chase, Ohio and finally transported to Fort Delaware. He has NO prison transfers. His only Federal POW is captured at Gettysburg and sent to Fort McHenry and then transferred to Fort Delaware.

The Federal POW records the ADAH appears to be using are those made by General Ainsworth and his staff at the turn of the century. It is my opinion they made a mistake. For this to be true then Thomas A. Jones would have had to be captured at Tullahoma and taken to Fort Delaware and then enlist in the 3rd Maryland Cavalry and then desert on October 16, 1863. Why desert the Confederate Army only to desert the Union Army only to join up with the Confederate Army again? All of this would have had to happen within about a 90 day period.

I am not related to Thomas A. Jones. My only purpose is to find the truth about him as he cannot speak for himself any more. Let your research take you to the truth as you see it. Thx Dennis"

Alan, Not hearing back from the ADAH I assumed they were going to keep the old information on their site and I was a little upset about the reputation of Thomas Armstrong Jones so I posted it on this site. Now it appears they have corrected the information. See new information:
