I recently ran across an officer (Lt. Colonel) in a Georgia Infantry unit who lived in Eufaula and was captured at Appomattox. He was sent to Johnson's Island. He had to post a $2,000 bond "given for the faithful observance of the Oath of Allegiance". Copies of the order are in his service records.
This is the only time that I have ever run across this "bond" situation.
Who can tell me why this officer had to post bond?
