Re: W. W. White, 62nd Alabama Infantry Regiment

It's quite possible that the records you need have not been filed correctly. The reason would have to do with the soldier's company. At the time Fort Gaines surrendered, his company belonged to Lockhart's Battalion, Alabama Junior Reserves. War Department clerks who processed the original records may not have associated Lockhart's Battalion with the 1st Alabama Junior Reserves. I'm guessing his records are filed under 'Miscellaneous" and not any one state or unit. Since there are so many unidentified Confederate records in the name "W White" or something similar, it could take quite some time to search all of them.

The records will reflect that White surrendered with the garrison of Fort Gaines. Officers and men were imprisoned at New Orleans, and taken to Mobile Bay for exchange in early January 1865.
