The following is a list of the 6 former Alabama Confederate soldiers who were desirous of taking the oath and joining Company F and G of the 1st Connecticut Cavalry. All enlisted on October 1, 1863 and mustered into their new Union Regiment on October 5, 1863. All were prisoners of war and were incarcerated at the Union prison at Fort Delaware. The former Confederates from Company F were transferred to Company G in April of 1864. Some of the former Confederates kept their names in the 1st Ct. while it appears that others changed their names perhaps to avoid detection if captured by their former Army. However there may be a multitude of reasons including spelling etc. In April of 1864 the former Confederate soldiers were transferred to the North West to avoid being captured by their former Confederates. Many were transferred to the 1st United States Independent Company after arriving in the North West. The 1st United States Independent Company should not be confused with the 1st United States Infantry. Also this may not be the complete list of North Carolina Confederates but just those former Confederates that I could find. (The North West meaning Fort Snelling, Minnesota) Those finishing their enlistments were eligible for a United States pension. Also it should be noted that the Union enlisted those Confederates who had been conscripted or deserted from their Confederate units. Many former Confederates had a multitude of reasons why they wanted to enlist in the Union Regiment. Some Confederates said they were conscripted when they had not been. Some said they deserted when in fact they had been captured. On the flip side there were many who were conscripted and also had deserted. The following are the state break downs. Of the 120 former Confederates who joined the 1st Connecuticut Cavarly on October 5, 1863, 49 I could not find with Confederate units due to spelling errors etc. The 71 that were found were broken down to the following states:
1) North Carolina=24
2) Virginia=16
3) Alabama=6
4) Mississippi=6
5) Tennessee-5
6) Florida=4
7) South Carolina=4
Georgia=4
9) Arkansas=1
10) Louisiana=1
It should also be noted that out of the 71 former Confederates found 62 were captured during the Gettysburg campaign. The following are the 6 former Confederates from Alabama who joined the 1st Connecuticut Cavalry.
