Not so fast --
As mentioned earlier, this man could easily be among the great majority of Roddey's men without a service file. Some officers whose names appear on inspection reports written by Capt Hammond can't be found in the records.
The 10th Alabama Cavalry only has about 300 service records total. That's at least two of three records missing; probably more. Stuart's Cavalry Battalion has less than 100 records total; maybe six out of every seven records missing. More records are missing for units serving under Roddey than any other Alabama brigade.
In my opinion, the Graves pension application isn't so inconsistent to be classified as fraud. There's more right about it than wrong. If you want to make that case, I'll take the opposite side to be fair to the man.
