Re: deaths during and after war higher than estima

T. C. McDaniel, Private, Company D, 28th Alabama Infantry, admitted Chimborazo Hospital, Richmond, Va. July _, 1862, gunshot wound, flesh of knee, furloughed for 40 days July 13, 1862, Bonsack Depot, Va., no other records

Note: He would have been dropped from the rolls sometime prior to the end of 1863 as his name does not appear on the subsequent February 29, 1864 muster. He could have been dropped for death, desertion, discharge, capture, missing, etc.

...........

Robert McCaniel, Private, Company F, 23rd Regiment Alabama Infantry, enlisted November 10., 1861 at Montgomery by Capt. Wagner for the war, detailed on extra duty driving Brigade Wagon April 14 through February, 1863, recorded the end of April, 1863 as sick in Vicksburg hospital, captured in hospital at Vicksburg July 4, 1863, paroled with sick and wounded July 16, shipped with the sick and wounded to Mobile Bay via New Orleans arriving August 4, 1863, no further records

Note: There are no surviving post Vicksburg muster rolls which does not allow us to ascertain his subsequent travel. He would have been held in a local Mobile, Ala. hospital until fit to travel, then most likely furloughed for some period of time home. Then, either discharged or required to return to the regiment.
