Re: Co F, 1st Rgt Alabama Cavalry/PVT John Schwart

Charles --

For the most part the broken links were not truly useful anyway. The most useful ones have remained in service for many years.

John Schwartz belonged to 2nd Co "E", not "F". He enlisted in the "Sandy Williams Guards" at Montgomery AL on Jan 15, 1862. Original company members came from Butler and Monroe Counties, John Schwartz being a resident of Monroe. He appears in the 1860 census as a painter, age 33, born in Switzerland.

Capt Abney and his officers and men were assigned to Clanton's 1st Alabama Cavalry as Company "H". About November 28, 1862, General Bragg ordered the regiment to be consolidated into six companies and merged with the 1st Alabama Partisan Ranger Battalion. These five companies served as part of that command until later reconstituted as the 12th Alabama Cavalry Battalion on March 1, 1864. During this period the company was known as 2nd Company "E". After March 1, 1864, it became 3rd Company "H".

Surviving rolls show John Schwartz as detailed for service with the regimental surgeon. In 1866 he appears on one of the first IRS rolls ever as a retail liquor dealer with a business in Claiborne AL, so John Schwartz definitely survived the war.
