In Response To: Co D 14th ALA Infantry ()

There are quite a number of hospitals in the Richmond/Petersburg areas. Most of these have patient lists archived at the National Archives in Washington, DC. Of the two men in the records that I've found shown wounded at Gaines Mill, only one is recorded in a hospital, and that being the 3rd Alabama Hospital in Richmond, Va.

J. H. Pinckard, Private, Company D, 14th Regiment Alabama Infantry, enlisted July 26, 1861 at Auburn, Alabama by James A. Browne for the war, received pay, bounty, & clothing allowance August 29, 1862, recorded on the muster roll for the period June 20 to October 31, 1862, as "absent without leave,"* present on the next bi-monthly muster held the end of the year, surrendered with the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House, April 9, 1865

* There is nothing in his records which would indicate his status. All his Orderly (1st) Sergeant probably knew was that he was absent without permission on October 31. He very well may have been previously wounded, hospitalized, furloughed, and have overstayed his leave, but this should have been known and so recorded. It's a mystery. Perhaps your records may have been commingled with that of his brother/cousin, etc., below.
