In late 1864 Newton McCrary was assigned to Capt. Larkin Breed's company, 1st Class Militia, Randolph County AL. Larkin Breed was Sheriff of Randolph County. Duties of 1st Class militia involved law and order issues, such as surpressing theft, arson and attacks on families of soldiers and other civilians by deserters and other men avoiding service in the Confederate army.
