The story goes that the Citizens of Vicksburg would not celebrate Independence Day after the war until, I believe it was 1944.
Remember, Pemberton's army surrendered to Grant, July 4, 1863. Confederates also lost at Gettysburg the same day.

The reason for returning to celebrate the day was in honor of our troops who were now closing on in victory in WWII.
