In antebellum times the 12th State Militia Brigade was composed of 14th and 61st Regiments from Blount County, and the 6th and 39th Regiments from Morgan. Perhaps Campbell had been elected to the colonelcy of the 14th or 61st State Militia Regiment. This would have been prior to August 1863, when all such organizations were abolished by the Alabama legislature.
