From the Alabama Muster Rolls on Ancestry.Com is the following in the "Remarks" section for the listing of my wife's gg-granduncle, James Ivey Lanford, "Found in the entrenchments Petersburg, Nov. 2, 1864" and before that "d.w.", which as I understand it means "Died of Wounds".

The terminology "Found in the entrenchments..." is puzzling to me, as though he was separate from a group and they found him after he had been wounded. Could one infer that he was probably in an advanced or skirmisher's position or does this description mean anything special? Also, the "Died of Wounds" listing implies, to me, that he was still living when he was "Found" and died later.
