Thanks for your response. Do you know which state issued the pension? I'm wondering if this man lived over the line in Georgia. That may explain why he's not appearing in postwar Alabama records that I've searched.

As far as the image goes, I would expect most men in Hardie's Cavalry Battalion to have worn civilian clothing. I wondered about this when you mentioned the subject being in uniform. Could be that the man in your image is an older brother or another family member. Could also be that in the years following the war, this Confederate veteran joined a county militia unit.
