Thanks to each of you who have provided invaluable information about my great-great grandfather John Thornton!

He did indeed have a very serious wound. My grandmother (b 1898) told me that her grandfather came home from the War with an open wound. As a child, she remembered her grandmother having to take his intestines out and wash them. I do not yet know when or where he died.

One of my cousins has told me that he MAY be buried in Antioch West Baptist Church Cemetery in Butler County.
Both of us plan to visit the Greenville area this summer in search of additional documentation for our Thornton,
Smith, Herring and Kent ancestors. I will let you know when John Thornton's burial place is confirmed.

Where can I purchase the Thompson's book? Is the Confederate Census of 1907 available online?
