Edmund Burke, AL/TX

Alabama-born Edmund Burke (b. c1835, Tuscaloosa), went to Texas and served five years, pre-war, as private in Co. B, US 1st Mounted Rifles, 15 Apr 1856-15 Apr 1861, when discharged at Ft. Stanton, New Mexico on expiration of term.

On or about 31 Aug 1861, enlisted in Capt. Mechling's Texas Arty Btry (PACS), San Antonio as private, prom. corpl 31 Dec 61, present on roll Apr-Jun-Oct 62. (May have been detailed for or received signal training during this period.)

Received commission as 1st Lieut, Signal Corps (PACS), Oct 62 and served until resignation as Heth's signal officer 18 Aug 1864 (unfavorable rating by Maj Gen Heth).
Claimed he wished to rejoin (as private) the company to which he belonged before "promotion" (commission), "now attached to 2nd Ala Cavalry."

Shown in NPS S&S on-line listing as member of Co. D, 2 Ala Cav, per M374 r7.

Did Mechling's Texas arty btry become a component of 2nd Ala Cav as implied above, or have I missed something? I am curious about the sudden rise and fall of this man's career, and what became of him post-war.
