A. L. McEachern definitely signed the pension application on August 11, 1916. I'm looking at it. Looks like an old man's signature. The other name is fairly common, so it could have been a relative or descendant of the person who died during the war. Looks like McEachern was in Nashville at the same time as Mathew....but they could have been in entirely different regiments, if MR was in the 54th Alabama as you think he was. A lot of time had passed between 1864 and 1916. Have we told you that M R married again at age 70 (after the death of Jane) and had two more sons?
