According to his hospital records, BFG had a gunshot wound to his right hand and after spending a number of days in the C.S.A. General Hospital in Farmville, VA, receiving treatment for disease of ring and middle finger, he was given a 60 day furlough.

He states in his pension application, while trying to make his way back home to GA, the infection got worse. A widow woman took him in and while he was there, Federal soldiers over took him. A Federal surgeon amputated his right arm, below the elbow.
