Before the town became Girard it was known as Sodom. Some years ago I worked for General Walter J. "Crack" Hanna, who led the Alabama National Guard during its occupation of Phenix City. I have never known any man who could use profanity with greater imagination or creativity. The occupation represented the only time since Reconstruction that the U.S. military has taken over civil government in peacetime other than in a natural disaster.
