Choctaw Bluff is in Clarke County on the Alabama River. It is upstream from Dixie Landing (situated on the river at the end of Co. Rd. 84 in Baldwin County). The community of Carlton in Clarke County on county road 15 is NW of the site. Just east of Carlton, the river course looks like a duck head (bill pointed north) on most maps. Choctaw Bluff would be the top of the duck's head. Choctaw Bluff was the site where the 36th, 38th, and 18th Alabama were posted before the move to north Georgia and the start of the Chickamauga campaign.
Clarke County residents claim Choctaw Bluff to be the site of Piachi, the indian town where DeSoto met Tuskaloosa in a great battle.
