A private in Co. "B" of the 4th AL Infantry was courtmartialed in Dec 1864 for desertion. He was sentenced to three years' hard labor with ball and chain, according to the Civil War soldiers' database at ADAH. Also says he had a substitute, a J. Carroll, in Jan 1863. So if he had a substitute, how did he desert? And if he did desert and was sentenced to such a penalty, where would it have been carried out? Anyone know what happened to him afterwards?
