I read one article stating that Deas used his own funds ($28,000.00 in gold) to purchase 800 Enfield rifles. I don't know what kind. I am also wondering if that meant he had 800 men in the regiment in 1861. I know at Shiloh the unit was down to 435 men before the battle.
