Line Officer: A designation for officers who function between field and general officers; i.e., captains and lieutenants. Line Officers carried out commands but seldom issued their own.

Marker: A soldier designated to help the other members of his company to achieve the proper alignment during drill or parade. It was not unusual for drummers to be selected for this task; the marker typically carried a GUIDON. Line Markers are still used today for the same purpose.
