It's remarkable a man this age would enlist, and furthermore, survive the war. I have a hunch he may have spent most of his time assigned to hospitals.

Mark Goodwin, age 55, enlisted as a Private in Company D, 28th Alabama Infantry February 6, 1862 at Elyton, Jefferson County, Alabama, served on extra duty as Nurse at General Hospital, Enterprise, Miss., July 4 to September 1862, sent to hospital December 3, 1863 by Regimental Surgeon, admitted to 1st Mississippi CSA Hospital, Jackson, Miss. November 10, 1864, Chronic Rheumatism, returned to duty Nov. 12, paroled at Talladega, Alabama June 13, 1865
