I grew up in Dale County and my parents grew up in Dale and Barbour County. I can remember my father telling me the story of the hanging but the only detail I remember is that one could fill the hole in with dirt and leave the ground smooth, then come back the next morning and the hole had reappeared. My father died 5 years ago at age 82 but he told me he had visited the site many, many times over the years and the hole was always there. So somebody kept up the tradition of digging it out or else there is some validity to the story that it happens without human intervention. I don't remember ever visiting the actual site but seem to remember my dad pointing the location out to me as we crossed a nearby bridge.
