Re: Field Grade Officers 47th Ala. Inf.

John --

Signatures on receipts and requisitions are the best way to know who was in command on a specific date. For example, a receipt in the file of Captain Joseph Johnston Jr was signed by Col Jackson as brigade commander and Maj Campbell as regimental commander. It is dated Feb 6, 1863. By this we can be certain that both Capt Bulger and Capt Campbell were being recognized at higher ranks by this date. Col Jackson signs as regimental commander on Dec 31st.

The roll for Dec 11, 1862, has a note explaining that due to vacancies at Major and Lieut Col Capt Bulger should have the rank of Lieut Col. However, his rank is still captain. A search of records for other officers in the 47th Alabama may include a date of rank as Lieut Col earlier than Feb 6th.
