Re: Lt. Joshua Holt, Forrest's Escort

Scott --

After meeting with a friend who has long-time Wilcox County connections, I made a more thorough review of the Official Records. As Wilson's command reached the Chattahoochee River, Col. Lucas and his cavalry, a part of Steele's column, moved north along the east bank of the Alabama. Acting on a report that some of Forrest's men were collecting livestock in Wilcox County, Col. Lucas dispatched one company of the 1st Louisiana (U.S.) Cavalry towards Camden to drive them off. We don't have a report of this mission, but Lieut. Holt's death occurred the next day. This detachment rejoined the main column in Macon County about May 5th.

To learn more we're attempting to locate someone who's familiar with the Federal regiment mentioned.

We do know that Captain Freeman was shot and killed under combat circumstances. Confederate eyewitnesses agree as to what happened after he and his men were captured. As of this writing, we don't know what happened to Lieut. Holt, but his death doesn't seem to be connected.
