Re: Dent's Artillery at Chickamauga

Pvt. Perry C. Caldwell of Dent's Battery who was killed at Chickamauga on Sept 20, 1863 was from Tallapoosa County, Alabama. He was a former member of the Tallapoosa Rifles, Co. F, 1st Alabama Volunteers who enlisted with Felix Robertson's Battery at Pensacola when his 12 months term of enlistment was up. At least 18 members of the battery were former members of the Tallapoosa Rifles. They had received alot of training as heavy artillerists at Fort Barrancas and apparently wanted to continue in the artillery service. I think some of the confusion arises because Robertson's Battery was organized at Pensacola, however, it certainly was not a "Florida" unit, but a "Confederate" one. Most of the original men of the battery were Alabamians whose initial enlistments had expired while they were with Bragg's Army of Pensacola (I think I've seen that name used before??)and for various reasons they weren't interested in going home at the time.
