You might also try this book: _Desertion of Alabama troops from the Confederate Army; a study in sectionalism_ by Bessie Martin. It was published in New York in 1932 and reprinted again in 1966. There are other books on desertions, but this one is specific to Alabama, so it might be what you need. Try your local library, and use interlibrary loan if they don't have it.
