You may have hit upon something here. In 19th century regiments there was no Co. J. designation. (in other words the 10 companies of a regiment were designated A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,I and K) There are a couple of different explanations for this. One is it was done to save confusion between the cursive I and J. The other is that since there is no J in the Latin alphabet and most officers were well versed in the language it was natural for them to omit the J. Whatever the reason there was in reality no "Company J".
