These dates may help you figure it out:

Organized at Montgomery, May 5, 1861. [The companies were obviously recruited before the organization.]

The unit was in Yorktown, Va. in March 1862. While there, the regiment re-enlisted and reorganized.

One source (Dr. Ken Jones' website) states about Co. F of the 2nd Ala. Artillery, "The majority of this company organized into an artillery unit on 28 December 1861." Another source states, "The company was organized at Tuscaloosa on November 29, 1861."

At any rate, it looks to me like there were actually two re-organizations, and this explains some weird inconsistencies in the records of the 5th Ala. Inf. Regt.

The regiment was involved in a skirmish at Farr's Cross Roads, and came under fire at Yorktown, but was first engaged at the Battle of Seven Pines. [I don't have these dates at hand.] Before Seven Pines, the regiment was present at both 1st Manassas (Bull Run) and Williamsburg, but were not engaged.
