Finding an ancestor in the Civil War.

Your first step would be to check Broadfoot's listings of Confederate soldiers to see if you find a match to his name. Then research any that you find in the regimental records to see if one of them came from your man's county, or nearby. Don't give up hope, though, if you don't find him in Broadfoot's. It is based solely on the regimental records, which are usually only 75% complete (sometimes more, sometimes much less complete).

If you don't find him in Broadfoot's, the next best bet is the Unfiled Papers and Slips microfilm (use the search feature of this forum for more info on this microfilm).

If you still don't find him, you'll need to check local newspapers for info on his enlistment and/or death.

If still unfound, you'll have to start checking burial records, mortuary records, hospital records, and cemetery listings.

Each step gets harder.
