At Gettysburg, Co. E, 48th Alabama was commanded by Capt. Issom B. Small. The company was known as "The Jacksonians" from Marshall and Jackson counties. The Supplement to the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, part II, vol. 1, serial no. 13, pp. 767-775 indicates that the company carried 29 non-commissioned officers and privates into action at Gettysburg and came out with only 12 unhurt.
