Niles,
Things haven't changed that much, although Smith Lake has been responsible for some growth. The "Looney Tavern" play has overglorified the actions of some folks ancestors. I think that most serious C.W. buffs realize that sentiments were split in that area...rich mans war-poor mans fight, etc. It also allowed for a great deal of swapping sides in favor of whichever was on top at the moment and more than a little bushwhacking was carried out by gangs of thugs from that area against both sides. This was not the typical response in other non-slave holding areas by the poorer classes who saw the war as Yankee invasion of the South as a threat to hearth and home. Many counties are still punished by the current crop of politicos for their errant voting habits in the doling out of roadbuilding, bridges, etc., whether Democrat or Republican.
