I checked my copy of Southern Historical Society Papers Vol. XV Jan-Dec 1887 as this has a listing of all soldiers of the ANV that were paroled at Appomattox.I am sorry to report that there is no record of Pvt. John A. Caughlin of Co. C, 8TH Alabama Infantry Regiment, Forney's Brigade listed or any other by the name of Caughlin in that regiment that were paroled at Appomattox. Could he have been with another unit or on furlough? Maybe in a hospital somewhere? Are you sure that he was paroled at Appomattox and not captured on the way there from Petersburg? Sorry I could not find anything for you.
