In researching the 40TH Ala. Infantry Regt., I remember an entry in a diary or letter from one of the men that stated that while they were at Mobile during the summer of 1862, they had the option of going to Virginia or remaining in the Mobile area and they chose the latter. It was unclear if this decision was made solely by the various company officers or if a vote of the men was taken. I tend to believe the former. They were organized there in the early spring of 1862 and remained there until December 1862. There was apparently discussion of this subject and an option offered them or at least their preferences were solicited at that stage of the war. I know this is not much, but this vauge reference to having a preference by this single mention by this soldier is the only reference to any choice that I am familiar with.
