Can anyone translate this? "ALA 4 BN TR"

It looks like the 4th AL Battalion, but what about the TR? Or is there another explanation?

The grave marker belongs to John Thomas White of Franklin County, (probably) AL. I don't find any John Thomas White's in Alabama units, nor any John T. White's. There are several John White's and J. T. White's, but none in a 4th Battalion.

Any ideas?
