Bill...you might want to contact the National Archives in Washington, D.C. If you give them your ancestor's name and regiment they can look up his file within the regiment's. I had an ancestor in the 9th Alabama Cavalry- Capt. Robert Anderson McClellan- and in a memorandum after the war he said that Gen. Wheeler had disbanded the 9th outside of Chapel Hill after they heard of Lee's surrender. They had originally planned to go to Petersburg to join up with Lee's army (after having screened Sherman's March to the sea), then changed that to meeting Lee between Raleigh and Virgina. Wheeler told his men to take off and find their way back home to Alabama- they were under hot pursuit by Union Cavalry. Many of the men were captured- my ancestor made it home to Limestone County.
