Cotton Factors

In the surviving city directories of Mobile, which are primarily business directories in that decade, a number of cotton factors are listed in the advertisers index section, as well as others who didn't take out ads listed in the alphabetical listings. That would at least help you identify some of the merchants involved. I found them both on microfilm and in bound xerox copies of the original directories,in the genealogy section of the Mobile Library, 704 Government St. My gg grandfather was one, although no records of his business survive to my knowledge.
