As I understand it, the term "Dragoon" was all but supplanted by the term "Mounted Infantry" during the Civil War. Dragoons were armed with two pistols and a full length longarm (as opposed to a carbine longarm for the cavalry). Could the the 5th Battalion, Cavalry, Hilliard's Legion actually have been a "mounted infantry" and nicknamed the 5th Ala. Dragoons?
