I have a great-great-uncle, Robert Anderson McClellan, who was in the 9th Alabama Cavalry and was with Wheeler when they were turned back near Raleigh, NC at the end of the war. He left a a memorandum of the last months of the war, including the last week in NC. The original is in the Special Collections Library at Duke University.
