Hangings.

Most hangings were for desertion. This was early in the war. Desertion was later incouraged, at least by the Union.

Some hangings were for retribution of acts of the other side.

To be hanged for treason, though, he was most likely caught spying, for one side or the other. There is a good book on spys of the Civil War. Unfortunately, I don't remember the title. I'll look for it next time that I'm at the library.
