OK, I'll try to rephrase the question more clearly. Who was physically at the fort location the day *after* the battle, other than the small group of Confederates and one Union officer who were sent back by Forrest to try to return the wounded Union troops?
The book inscription is signed at Fort Pillow, by a ret. [retired?] soldier, on the 13th [the battle being on the 12th]. He is apparantly giving it as a gift to someone else. Unfortunately, he doesn't sign his actual name.
