Some Possibilities?
Fri Jul 27 10:09:51 2001

From the Broadfoot Publishing Roster of Confederate Soldiers - Alabama here are some possibles:

Harris J.M. Cav. Shockley's Co.
Harris John M. Cav. 5th Bn. Hilliard's Legion Co.A
Harris John 8th (Hatch's) Cav. Co.G
Harris John 1st Cav. Co.G

As the 1st and 8th (Hatch's) Cavalry did not serve with Forrest, they are not good possibilities. Shockley's Co. did serve with Forrest, but on other muster rolls this J.M. Harris is listed as "James M.". The 5th Battalion of Hilliard's Legion, became a part of the "10th Confederate Cavalry" which did serve under Forrest during the Chickamauga Campaign. Unfortunately, none of the companies of the 5th Battalion of Hilliard's Legion appear to have been recruited in Colbert County(at that time Franklin Co., AL). Still however, I would look very hard at this John M. Harris in the 5th Battalion before eliminating him as your ancestor.

Maybe others can help further.
