You are correct. My earlier statement about this attack being planned in advance was clearly wrong and based on a misreading of Federal dispatches sent as events developed on March 25th.

Looking over Federal reports from Wright's Sixth Corps, it seems that six of his eight brigades attacked that afternoon, plus two other regiments from the other two birgades on the skirmish line. Wright's dispatches describe a sector extended from the Skinner House east to the Jones House; Humphreys attacks struck from the Skinner House west to the Armstrong House. Not counting Griffin's Division which was committed along the Second Corps line late in the day, this looks like at least 32,000 Federal officers and men involved to some degree.
