Both men joined Co. "H", 44th Alabama Infantry Regiment, the "Dawson Warriors", which organized at Randolph in Bibb County on May 1, 1862, and left for Selma the following day. These men enlisted on May 6, 1862 and joined the company at that point. Jasper M. Wiley died on Feb. 8, 1863, while the regiment was stationed in coastal Virginia along the Nansemond River.

Francis J. Wiley was sent to a hospital at Richmond VA on Aug. 29, 1862, suffering with bronchitis. He received a thirty-day furlough on Sept. 6, 1862. He was admiited again on December 22, 1862, and again on February 18, 1863, diagnosed with pneumonia. He was released a month later, but returned with bronchitis on March 28, 1863, and released again on April 23, 1863.

Francis J. Wiley was present at Gettysburg PA (Devil's Den, July 2, 1863), but wounded during the fighting at Chickamauga GA, probably on the second day (Sept. 20, 1863), and sent to Montgomery AL for treatment. Evidently he was sent home to recover and never returned to his unit. He was paroled at Selma AL in June 1865.
