scalping incident
Sat Jul 21 23:03:17 2001

Thomas' Legion of Cherokee (N.C.) Indians served throughout the war in the mountain region of Tennessee and N.C. There was a problem with bushwhackers. The war in the mountain area had a lot of parallels to the Kansas/Missouri war before the big one began. Anyway, in September 1862, a troop of Thomas' Legion was ambushed and their leader mortally wounded. In retaliation, a few of the enemy were scalped. Evidently northern newspapers had a field day with this incident, the Confederate authorities were embarrassed, and the Cherokee had to promise that they would try to control themselves better next time.
