Also called the 2nd Mississippi-Alabama Cavalry, it continued under this designation for some time after the addition of Beall's three companies. Documents filed with the 8th Confederate Cavalry show it as such as late as Sept. 30, 1862.

The battalion merger took place at Purdy on March 28, 1862. There were seven companies: three from Alabama, three from Mississippi and one from Tennessee. The Tennessee company, Robertson's "Hardin County Yankee Hunters") were reassigned to the 1st Confederate Cavalry on April 18, 1862. Captain Roddey's "Tishimingo Rangers" was assigned to Baskerville's battalion but never served with it. There was an unsuccessful effort to have this company report to Brewer, and the missing company slot ("G") was filled by a company led by Capt. Joseph Harris Field. We have discussed this company at length in the past.
