Here are my notes on the 12th Alabama Cavalry Battalion, which served for much of the war as part of the 1st Alabama Cavalry. The two men listed served as its captains:

Company “G” of Calhoun County

W. T. Lakey. Mortally wounded near Rome, Georgia, May 15, 1864.
James A. Maxwell. Promoted Captain [September 30,] 1864, to rank from [May 15,] 1864.

Accepted in Confederate service on November 27, 1861, this troop moved from Rocky Hollow, Alabama, to Oxford, Alabama, two days later. It became 1st Company “E” of the 1st Alabama Cavalry Regiment. Members later formed 2nd Company “G” of that regiment, serving as Wheeler’s escort company from late 1862 until the early months of 1864. This command formed out of that unit about March 1, 1864.
