Other Mississippi Battlefields

George,

I want to echo Hoyt's remarks about your appreciated efforts and determination to protect the Mississippi CW Battlefields.

I grew up in West Point, MS moving to Memphis,Tn when I was in my early teens. I've trudged over most of the battlefields and skirmish sites in North and Central Mississippi. If there is any place, besides Corinth, Iuka and Tupelo (Harrisburg)where I've hoped to see some development and recognition it is Champion Hill (Baker's Creek).

I noted in Mr. Woodrick's letter that he makes no mention of this site, perhaps that is due to the location of the highway being built in North MS.

But even the preservation groups rarely mention it. From my perspective it is "the" most overlooked of battlefield sites, not only in Mississippi, but of all Civil War battles. It was the largest field engagement in the state, sealed the fate of Vicksburg and, as such, must be considered pivotal to the outcome of the war.

I know the local citizenry in Raymond is working hard to preserve that battlefield. The Port Gibson battlefield is relatively remote so it is not in immediate danger. Grand Gulf with its park is in good shape; however, Champion Hill the largest engagement of the Vicksburg Campaign, outside of the siege has only one obscure and hard to reach marker, as I recall.

I don't mean to get on a "rant" here, but I wish more was said and done about this important battlefield site.

Along with concerns over the destruction of historic sites due to the new highway, I think I'll write Mr. Bearman a letter and ask what, if anything, might be done about the Champion Hill battlefield.

Again thanks for your efforts.
