On his application for a pension my ancestor(who lived in Covington Co., Ala.) stated he enlisted in Jan 1863 at Troy,[Dale Co.] Ala., that he served as a "private in Co. A, 26th Cav., Clanton's Brigade." I have not been able to find a 26th Cav., only the 6th Cav. Was the 26th a part of some other unit? Or was the "26" an error on someone's part?
